The type of dream experience is directly determined by how involved you are in the narrative.
If the dream is directly about you, and you really feel that you are there, that you are moving in the dream, you are in the first person. The action depends on your own actions.
However, it is quite common that when dreaming the impression is that you are a spectator of something.
As if you were watching a screen, events unfold in front of your eyes in a logical sequence, or not, but your presence is unnoticed by the characters.
Spectator dreams are experiences like the one described above. At all times the dreamer is observing, in a more or less emotionally detached way, what is happening.
But this is not the end of the matter, there are different ways in which this type of dream presents itself.
Sometimes the dream observes you. That is, you are an observer of what you do as if you were an invisible presence that follows your body in its life. This kind of experience can be related to moments in which an unpleasant event occurs in the dream. In this case, a splitting occurs (the subject feels outside his or her body, as the only way to get away from the negative feeling). Although it is a defense mechanism, it is violent to observe oneself in a negative situation, especially if it involves terror or trauma.
It is possible that instead of oneself, the dream shows another person we know. In these dreams, it is interesting to observe the details and remember them, so that we can consult with the dreamed person. In my experience sometimes these dreams send you information about the other person, which you did not know before the dream.
Other times you observe events in the life of people you don’t know at all. As if you were connecting a camera in their mind, you connect with stories, often totally plausible, of people you don’t know. It is very curious how many details can be appreciated in this type of dream. Really the composition of these dreams is very realistic, getting to feel great empathy for the characters that appear to us in the dream; as if in some way we were part of the process by which the people who appear.
To finish with the post, as we talked about in the video, it seems that sometimes, when we sleep, we connect to some global network and we see other people’s lives. Or, it seems, perhaps, that the empathy we may passively feel in the daytime manifests itself at night with complete, understandable information in front of our focus.
Whatever the reason, spectator dreams are quite common, so if you feel like commenting on one that caught your attention, please do so below in the comments section.
